I have traveled through so much of Europe and the UK, as well as parts of Asia in my 36 years in the relocation industry, and when you travel on business in foreign lands, it can be very stressful trying to make your travel plans, figure out the best mode of transport from one city / country to another, all usually in a time constraint and appointment filled itinerary.

I recently had one of these “fun filled” adventures, at least your co-workers think you’re having fun traveling to all these great cities and countries.. don’t get me wrong, it can be fun, but when you’re traveling to 5 countries, 7 cities and 17 appointments in 12 days, there isn’t much time for fun. This was my recent schedule, and trying to maximize your time, and at the same time trying to stay sane doing so, I had to rely on planes and trains.

I have always loved the train systems in Europe. They are so much more relaxing, on time, flexible schedules to any part of Europe you need to go to/from, unlike much of the U.S. The trains are traveling so periodically, so reliably and swiftly, that it makes your travel stress free. There is no need to fight airports all the time, Customs to deal with when traveling in between the EU, except when I crossed from Switzerland into France, and just before getting the Stroudsburg, I got asked by 2 French Customs officers for my ID, no problem, glad to oblige, even didn’t mind them going thru my dirty luggage, but when they padded me down, I thought “why me?”. Again no problem, glad to oblige, and once they looked thru my wallet and saw I didn’t have E10,000 on me, they went on their merry way.

When I got to Paris I mentioned this to my colleagues and they said that the Customs officers either look for the “rich” or the “suspicious” ones. I asked wonder which they thought I was, and I was told the “rich” because they may have thought I was bringing in money from Switzerland. I said, I wish I was one of those “rich” ones, but, hey, I’m in the removal business…..

Whether I was in Europe, or in the UK on the last leg of my trip, I knew that I could rely on the train systems, as well as the Underground, and that I didn’t need to stress over being late for appointments. I wish we could say this for the transportation systems in much of the U.S., our mass transit systems are good but not to the level of much of the world.

Kudos to the transportation systems throughout Europe and the UK, they made my trip as stress free as it could have been
